7 Pros And Cons Of Collaboration With Other Bold Bloggers

Risks and Rewards of Networking – Important Pros and Cons of Blogging Business Collaboration

Do you know the pros and cons of collaboration with bloggers?

What pain points do you encounter when collaborating with other bloggers? In this blog post, guest author John E. Bialas shares “pros and cons of collaboration with bloggers.”

At ThExtraordinariOnly, we have had our fair share of pros and cons of collaboration, including obstacles, challenges, or downsides of blogger collaboration.

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

– Dale Carnegie

Let’s see how headaches caused by the collaboration process are just part of the process and the blogging journey.

By the time you’re done reading this blog post, John will reveal to you 7 pros and cons of collaborating with other bloggers. This post explains 4 advantages of collaboration and 3 disadvantages of collaboration.

Fire away John on the pros and cons of collaboration with other bloggers

I have all kinds of time as a blogger who retired as a newspaper journalist in March 2017. Since then, I have devoted about 50% of it to collaborating with other bloggers.

Do we all agree that the word “collaboration” has mostly positive connotations?

I’ve thought a lot about the subject, such as “The do’s and don’ts of collaborating in the blogging world,” “The pros and cons of collaboration…” or “The risks and rewards…”

I finally settled on ‘pros and cons of collaboration’ as the best way to share my experience.

“I realized early in my career that precisely what one reader doesn’t like is what another reader loves. Collectively, any writer’s audience presents a mishmash of expectations that can never all be met. What one-tenth of my readership may not be crazy about, the other nine-tenths savors. The moment you start altering a book or a painting or any type of art as if it’s a public collaborative, you crucify its soul. I’d rather irritate a few people and delight a lot than touch no one.”

7 Important Pros and Cons of Collaboration in the Blogging Circles

When I think of collaborating, promotion comes to mind. I promote the work of other bloggers to help them, and they help me in return.

77% of all internet users read blogs.

This is accomplished mostly through sharing posts on Twitter and Facebook, and I love the upsides and hate the downsides. Thsis forms the premise of this blog post on the pros and cons of collaboration in the blogging world.

The Cons of Collaborating with Other Bloggers

While there are many benefits of blogger collaboration, these are some potential disadvantages I have experienced.

1. Losing Track of Time

I accept any and all Twitter blog-sharing invites. They go like this:

  • “Follow”
  • “RT this tweet”
  • ” Link your latest blog post”
  • “Visit other blogs”

Collaboration takes me away from blogging. I follow the threads, I share my latest post on the threads, I like posts of other bloggers, I retweet their posts and I pin them to my “Blog posts I like,” and I would do this for a few hours instead of just a few minutes, and then I would realize it’s 11:30 p.m. and I would be tired and stressed because I failed to work on my own blogs.

2.  A Sense of Obligation

After I started collaborating, I thought I would be forced to do it 24/7/365 for fear if I didn’t reciprocate, I would be called out for it.  Following threads, liking posts, retweeting them and pinning them became a dangerous cycle for me. My mind crashed from all the activity and I needed to rethink what I was doing. I’ve reduced the number of threads I participate in and I no longer have the desire to keep up with everybody else.

Twitter wasn’t my epiphany.

Bloggers Traffic Community

Instead, it was my time spent on the Bloggers Traffic Community website that made me understand I had to cut back on collaboration. On its home page, the Bloggers Traffic Community says it  “is similar to Facebook blogging groups that most bloggers who are trying to promote their blogs are used to. However not only is Bloggers Traffic Community a more powerful version of a Facebook blogging group. It comes without the limitations and hassles that plague Facebook Groups.

Storytellers, by the very act of telling, communicate a radical learning that changes lives and the world: telling stories is a universally accessible means through which people make meaning.

– Chris Cavanaugh

That message is true. I love the Bloggers Traffic Community. It helps me and I hope I have helped its members. There are blogging threads mornings, afternoons and nights. Every day, I would visit the Bloggers Traffic Community and contribute to its threads..

Routine

Now I’ve made it a weekly habit because of its rules, one of them being, “Please participate only if you are sure you are going to complete all other people’s links. This is 100% reciprocation. Those who drop links without visiting risk getting removed from the group.”

I have no problem with the rules. My concern was waking up at 3 in the morning because I forgot to like a post.

Once I got out of my daily Bloggers Traffic Community routine, I found the motivation to improve my blogging-collaborating ratio. It’s 5-1 and collaborating is leading. I want to reverse that and then increase it to give my blogging a 10-1 lead.

3. Criticizing Another Blogger’s Work

OK, someone wants feedback on their content or their design. I have learned to finesse my way in providing feedback after I found out that pointing out the flaws got me nowhere and probably didn’t help the blogger.

No one responded to my criticism, so I stopped, and I feel good about that.

The Pros of collaborating in the blogging world

Because this blog post is about the pros and cons of collaboration of the blogger’s circle, here are some of the ways that blogger collaboration can be advantageous.

1.  Meeting People

Unlike a lot of other people, I don’t see social media as some sort of false reality. I believe the people I meet are genuine, helpful, likable and encouraging. They make my day.

The goal is to provide inspiring information that moves people to action.

– Guy Kawasaki

2.  The Interaction

Build connections with other bloggers. Engagement just might lead to opportunity.

Facebook group

I was in a Facebook group in which Alan Percal, co-founder and CEO of PERC360.com, asked, “Would you like to write for us? Let me know.”

I contacted him and he made me a regular contributor. I wrote articles that the editor at my newspaper would have never found interesting: Unusual takes on baseball, basketball, football, rock music and magazines. My stories were in line with how PERC360.com promotes itself: “News for short attention spans. All articles are under 360 words.”

Alan gave me the freedom to use his site’s WordPress to write my stories, and one of the advantages was that I became more knowledgeable and comfortable with WP.

Though I no longer write for PERC360.com, I thank Alan for giving me the chance to post on his site and allow me to carry my voice.

By approaching your interactions through the lens of likability, you can expect to be happier, more comfortable, and more successful in establishing meaningful relationships.

Discovery is also opportunity.

Twitter

In October 2019, I started following a Twitter account named Praise My Basset Hound! and  a person who runs the account asked me if I own a basset hound.

Turns out I do. I even have a blog, Pictures of Tilly, which is about my basset. Her name is Tilly and Tilly is actually Patty’s dog. Patty is my wife.

I sent the Praise person a picture of Tilly and she encouraged me to send other photos to feature in a 2020 basset calendar. One photo was selected and Tilly became one of the August calendar girls..

The Praise person may not be a fellow blogger and I’m OK with that if that’s the case. I’m more than happy that I discovered the account, the Praise person discovered me and Tilly and Tilly got her opportunity, which is a first for her.

The Praise person and I became followers because of our pleasant interaction.

3. Growing My List of Twitter Followers

My number of followers stayed the same for years, but collaboration has helped double it.

I don’t think the Facebook blogging groups would ever do that for me. It seems like I always have the same number of Facebook friends.

My Twitter followers inspire and motivate me. They include writers, novelists, editors, web developers, book bloggers, lifestyle bloggers and travel bloggers.

4. A Lot of Learning

I’m hooked on such good stuff as “How to Spring Clean Your Blog,” “How To Get Over A Reading Slump,” “The Ugly Side of Blogging that Everybody Talks About ,” “What the Most Viral Reddit Images Can Teach Marketer,” “How to create evergreen posts that last forever” and “SEO 101 for the non-techy blogger.”

Those articles, which I saw on Twitter, were from just the first 10 days of February. Remember February? Few cares, few worries.

In many ways, effective communication begins with mutual respect, communication that inspires, and encourages others to do their best.

– Zig Ziglar

Then I’m ready to read about other subjects, I let my wanderlust take me to travel blogs. My favorite on the Bloggers Traffic Community is Valdas Travel Video, where I can dream about vacationing in Poland, the homeland of my ancestors. One of the best Valdas posts is about Bialystok, which reminds me of my last name, and the post led me to know more about the Polish city.

I always enjoy eating a bialy or two, a roll similar to a bagel, and its name also reminds me of my own name. I found a food site that includes a story about the bialy’s historical connection to Bialystok.

Pros Vs Cons of Favorite Blog Collaborations

“I have always believed in the power of collaboration. Early on in my professional career, I realized that you can’t develop all the competencies you need fast enough on your own. Furthermore, if you don’t collaborate, your ideas will be limited to your own abilities. As a result, you will not be able to serve your clientele and thus can’t achieve the anticipated impact.”
