Later on, she was married to Moses Mcwilliams and gave birth to their daughter Lelia McWilliams (later known as A’Lelia Walker) on June 6, 1885. Tragically, Moses died in an accident in 1887 leaving Sarah a widow and a single mother at age 20.

Sarah started the door-to-door haircare business that she grew from developing her own hair growth products to cure a scalp ailment that had resulted in her own hair loss. She promoted her walker products by traveling around the country giving lecture-demonstrations. Upon establishing Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company and Walkers House of Hair products for cosmetics and training sales beauticians, her profits grew. She ran a very successful business. Sarah’s business acumen led her to be the first black woman millionaire in the early 1900s. She was one of the wealthiest self-made women in America and one of the most successful women and African-American business owners ever.
Madam C.J. Walker served as a role model. Living by the motto of hard work and self-help, she achieved greatness. She was known for her philanthropy, activism, and was a patron of the arts.
