Social media is good or bad
Good social media outcomes online confirm that social media can be quite a good thing, but it has a number of quite confusing and unpleasant user experiences.
Are you among those who think that social media is toxic?
A sociologist, Prof. Damon Centola of Penn defines “toxic’ to contain polarizing ideas, echo chambers, and filter bubbles.
Like many other advancements in communication technology, social media has a good, bad and ugly side when it comes to its relationship with crime, criminal justice, and the law.
Good social media for personal and/or society-wide benefits
How awesome is good social media then?
Social media is not always an online distraction or procrastination platform. While some may be addicted to their social media networks, it is one of the best ways to stay informed.
Too much social media can be toxic and have negative effects on teens.
Spending an astounding amount of time on social sites, the average 13 to 18-year-old teen spends about nine hours on social media each day, while 8 to 12-year-old ‘tweens’ are on for about six hours a day.
At first glance, negative side effects of too much social media cannot be sidelined. Notice how a perfect selfie may cost you your life as shared on Statista?

We will not explore the potential negative side effects of too much social media here.
Social good of good social media practices
Usage among older school students is at another level. Out of all the 100 top social media sites, ninety-seven percent of 13- to 17-year-olds use at least one of seven major online platforms (PEW Research). It is impossible to ban social media entirely in schools because of its numerous bad effects, as it is also very useful to students.
However, students can be taught awe-inspiring good social media outcomes accrue from better ways of use while enhancing all-around productivity, morals, and intelligence. If children ever feel uncomfortable about something they see or read on social, they should talk to a parent, a teacher, or another trusted adult.
On the flip side, teens can use social media to do good. Young people are often unfairly characterized as being self-absorbed and selfish. But many of them use social media to do good and make positive changes within their community and others.
How social media is beneficial
What gets overlooked is how social media can create a lot of positivity in the world. Don’t good social media outcomes overshadow even the perceived goodness? Most social media is made with good intentions, from reuniting with old friends or keeping up with distant relatives.
- Social media can help to strengthen friendships and keep friends close. But as the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be bad for a person.
- Good social media has opened up many beneficial avenues and opportunities for this generation to enjoy.
- Social media gives powerless people a voice.
It ain’t all bad – what’s good about social media?
A case in point is Theta Gutenberg with climate change using #FridaysForFuture hashtag.
We also have seen the growing success of the #metoo movement.
Surprising this ‘me too’ movement has not only addressed sexual harassment at the workplace but has also seen cases like ongoing ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ series come to light.
While it’s impossible to predict the final outcome of the current power ruptures going on globally, people having a voice can only be good for democracy – thus an easily accessible online platform. Thank heavens for super great and wonderful social media outcomes!
Characteristics of effective social media content
